SPJ calls for journo arrests at occupy events to end

Along with hundreds of occupy protesters, police across the country have been detaining and harassing scores of journalists who cover the occupations.

Last week the Society of Professional Journalists condemned the arrests and called for city administrators to drop charges against journalists who were arrested while covering occupy events and other protests. SPJ notes that the majority of the individuals arrested had their full press credentials on display when they were taken into custody. Journalists have been arrested in New York, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Richmond, VA, Nashville, and Chapel Hill, NC. In all, some 32 journos have been arrested nationwide.

In the meantime, hundreds of protesters are still being arrested on a daily basis, including 70 in San Diego 31 in Washington DC and 19 in Portland, OR. Occupy sites are now beginning to dwindle in many cities.
